Blyton Minicross Sunday 25th - Monday 26th May 2008

One over-indulgent wasted conversation later, and we had decided to go camping to watch the Minicross round at Blyton Track. Apparantly there was a hog roast and a whole collection of Mini clubs going, according to information gathered. Sounds good. I decided we should get there early on sun, so we could get involved with the other clubs and generally pratt around for a bit before racing commences on the monday. Granted, looking back i think we got there a BIT early.

We arrived at what we believed to be the venue. Bit of a farm really. We drove throught this dilapidated looking farmyard, for quite a bit, until we spotted a small sign that said 'Mini Parking Only'....Wahey!! It pointed to a rather empty field which lead right up to the edge of the track along the 'start straight'. So we picked a good spot and set up camp. I must say at this point it was bloody windy, but we trudged on, seasoned campers that we are. We placed Steve's magic brolly outside the tent to stop it raining for the weekend, and despite the MET office, locals, and farmer's reports of torrential rain, it stayed dry. Told you it was a 'magic brolly'!

Once erected, we entered and decided to reward our hard work by consuming a large quantity of beer and smoke in a rather concentrated time period. That coupled with the fact we had got there a BIT early on a sunday, resulted in serious mashed bunnies. You see, i had brought a tv to watch the grand prix and by the time it started i couldn't really focus. He He.1pm and we were both badgered! No-one else had even turned up yet!

As the afternoon rolled on a few clubs here and there turned up and set up around us in the field. Both Skegness and Louth Mini club were there. Lincs mini-chaos also turned up to literally cause some chaos! They're great guys at Chaos, check'em out if you can. And a spattering of mini owners and enthusiasts alike. There were a few silly games going on, mini-push, water games, raffles and such. Always a bit daft, which we like.

That evening there was, indeed, a hog roast and i must say it was fantastic. The beer tent was crammed by the time it was dark and didn't empty till it was light again! The Dj's/Musical entertainers were a good laugh aswell. We hung out with them for quite a bit too. Whatever time we arrived back at the tent is beyond me, but it was late/early, you decide.

The next morning we were woken by the Drakarts warming up. What a noise!!! We were that close to the track all we really needed to do was open it and watch. How cool is that! The racing was great to watch. One of the best rounds was the open class. There was a MG-ZT rwd 2.0 turbo, Escort mk4 4wd turbo, 1380 fwd mini, and fwd Seat leon. The escort was frankly untouchable being 4wd but the Mini was keeping second place over the MG-ZT quite nicely. In the three heats the mini placed 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd. This put him 2nd on the grid for the final. The race was underway, the mini and the ZT fighting all the way.Mini beats him under braking, corners quicker and then gets caught out on the long straight! Suddenly the crowd were silent, the ZT was pushing really hard to get past but the mini was not having it. Some seriously late braking and a big set of balls later and the mini had beat the ZT to the finish line on the last bend. Truly awsome the crowd went mental long live tha mini! The rest of the afternoon was filled with more mini mayhem on the track including 1 nutta who decided to roll his mini about FIVE times on the last bend. All in all a great two days had by all. We shall go again.
